WHY SEL ON BIPOC WHEELS?

WHYSEL ON BIPOC WHEELS?

Social Emotional Learning on Black Indigenous People Of Color Wheels(SEL on BIPOC Wheels) is the brainchild of Darius Coulibaly, PhD.Dr. Coulibaly is a visionary and racial justice-centered school leader, who argues that most SEL curricula, pedagogies, and practices employed in public and nonpublic schools are white-centered, disempower, police, harm, erase, and dismiss the voices, pains, stories, and histories of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color students and educators.

Dr. Coulibaly believes that schools should no longer teach SEL without taking into consideration the trauma that marginalized students of color experience in their communities and schools, systemic racism, the white supremacist practices and ideology that are prevalent and pervasive in our K12 schools and college campuses. This is evident by the growing list of banned books and states (at least 37) that have restricted or banned the teaching of African-American history, and America’s undeniable history of racism, from chattel slavery to Jim Crow.

Endless Learning Consulting LLC

Our goals are to:

  1. disrupt the school-to-prison pipelineby increasing students of color’s self awareness, ability to cope appropriately with challenging emotions, and navigating social dynamics in our schools and communities.
  2. restore, heal, and empower students and staff of colorwho continue to experience trauma (physical violence, early childhood trauma, racial trauma, bullying, etc.) in their communities and at school. Research shows that 61% of black children and 51% of Hispanic children have experienced at least one ACE, compared to 40% of white children. In every part of the country, black students have the highest rate of ACE.
  3. provide a safe, nonjudgmental spacefor difficult conversations about systemic racism, white supremacy, educational opportunity gap, discipline gap, through culturally responsive and trauma-informed lenses, and to receive support.
  4. depart from the dominant white and individualisticset of values about behavior, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making to adopt a culturally responsive approach to SEL concepts.
  5. Strengthen the school-BIPOC families and communitiespartnerships.
